How can I get a free boiler?

If you want to reduce your energy bills, replacing your boiler is one of the best routes to go down. Unfortunately not everyone will be eligible for the free boiler scheme, run by the Government and funded by energy companies.

However, that doesn’t mean you’ll have to pay out the full installation costs for a new boiler. With the Green Deal scheme you can receive finance with a loan to cover the costs, which is then paid back with the money you save on heating bills.

The Green Deal works by calculating how much you’ll save with certain energy efficiency measures in place, giving you the opportunity to be environmentally friendly and cut bills too. And under the guidelines of the scheme, you won’t pay back more than you save each month.

Green Deal benefits

With the Green Deal you effectively receive a free boiler and there’s:

  • No upfront payments
  • No restrictions on who can apply
  • The opportunity to save money on fuel bills by becoming more energy efficient
  • The Golden Rule, which states homeowners will not be paying back more than what they save on energy bills

If you’re interested in the Green Deal scheme, the first step is for an approved assessor to visit your home and calculate the savings achievable with certain home improvements. It’s not just the central heating that’s looked at, and you could also upgrade insulation in the walls and loft whilst considering double glazed windows too.

The assessor will provide a report on findings, tell you the savings achievable and provide you with a list of Green Deal installers. If you want to go ahead with the installation you’ll have to use one of these.

If you fail to qualify for a free boiler grant, then taking a loan with the Green Deal is a good opportunity which should certainly not be dismissed.

However, advice from experts in the industry will always be, if you can afford a replacement boiler yourself, then don’t apply for a loan. By paying the installation costs, all savings you make will go straight into your pocket and this is as much as £300 a year.
